Things to do in Singapore - Free Entry into Asian Civilisation Museum (15 and 16 Oct 2011)

There are not many things to do in Singapore except eating, shopping and really just walking around. This weekend (15 to 16 Oct 2011), the Asian Civilisation Museum is having an open house - meaning its free entry for all. So it is a pretty good deal as the exhibition on the Terracota Warriors are on. It is a good chance to visit the museum if you have not done so.

The Asian Civilisation Museum is located just opposite Fullerton Hotel right beside Victoria Concert Hall (which is now undergoing renovation). Not too sure whether parking is currently available there but I parked my car at UOB Plaza which was basically $3.50 per entry. Took a short walk across the bridge and I was inside the museum.

The exhibits are all located at the 2nd floor and it was quite crowded. Not surprising really since it was free admission to all. I have always found ancient antiques/artefacts pretty cool so it is worth the visit if you like to see such stuff too. Of course, took a short stroll down the Singapore River too

Free Movie - The Great Train Robbery

The weekend is almost here and many people are perhaps looking through the cinema guides to find out what to watch.

Well, since it is still early... I am posting a short 10 minute movie here for your viewing pleasure. This movie will definitely make you more appreciative of the kind of movies we have today.

Titled : " The Great Train Robbery", it was filmed in 1903 and is full of funny scenes that look really fake and stuff. But when it was first screened, the audience was actually so afraid as they thought it was real! I find that almost hard to believe. But maybe it's because they were watching a narrative like movie for the first time in their lives.

Enjoy!

StarHub Cable TV - Upgraded to Basic Plus

Over the new year, I discovered a promotion by Starhub that allowed me to upgrade my basic group channels to the basic plus at no additional cost for 6 months. Finding that this was too good an opportunity to miss, I immediately signed up for it through the telephone.

Within a few days, I got all my Basic Plus Channels on my Starhub Cable TV.

This included ALL these channels like:
  1. Crime & Investigation Network
  2. NatGeo Adventure
  3. NatGeo Wild
  4. AXN Beyond
  5. Animax
  6. Channel V
  7. FoxCrime
  8. Sci Fi
  9. Universal Channel
  10. BBC Entertainment
  11. BBC Lifestyle
  12. FX
  13. MGM
  14. The Style Network
  15. Turner Classic Movies

Wow, a total of 15 extra channels for no additional cost!

Of course, I am sure Starhub was just interested in retaining me as my customer after they lost the rights to the ESPN channel to SingTel.

Anyway, it was too good a deal to miss for paying $25.68 only. I get the additional 15 channels to my existing basic group.

Switching my News Basic Group to Lifestyle Basic Group

I also realised that I did not watch much of the news so I switched my news basic group for the lifestyle basic group. Yes, you should do the switch too if you are not watching the news.

So my 3 basic groups now are Education, Entertainment and Lifestyle.

Just a question to readers:

What are your basic groups that you subscribe too for StarHub Cable TV?

Do you intend to switch over to SingTel's Mio TV?

How to Get Your Credit Card Annual Fee Waived

Today, I managed to get my credit card annual fee of $150 waived.

How did I do it?

It is simple. All it takes is a simple phone call to customer service.

I have a DBS credit card and all I did was to call the customer service hotline. I waited for roughly 5 minutes to be put through to an operator.

All I asked was that the annual fee be waived. The customer service officer was extremely polite and did not even ask for the reason why. She just said "Okay" and it was done.

She then went on to inform me that I had some points that were expiring and advised me on what to redeem which she proceeded to help me with too.

Just a few simple steps and I saved $150!

Most banks are more than happy to waive the annual fee as long as you ask. If they refuse to budge, you can threaten to cancel your credit card and place your business with other banks. That should make them budge.

7 Reasons Why I Started the $50 Contest

I guess a lot of you must be wondering why I started the $50 Contest.

(For new comers, you can view the $50 Contest here)

I guess the following are the 7 main reasons why I started this prize money giveaway:

1. I felt generous and just wanted to spread the Christmas joy around.

2. To reward readers of this blog who have been following and reading my sometimes mundane postings and putting up with all the stuff I blog about.

3. I wanted to know whether people would actually comment to get the prize money.

4. I wanted to know how long it would take to get 50 comments. I thought I would get it within 2 days. But I was wrong.

5. I was interested to see if people would actually collaborate to get the prize money.

6. I wanted to see who would sacrifice and post the 49th comment.

7. I wanted to see whether this would be a good viral marketing tool.

Of course, I did not come up with these reasons and start the contest. Instead, I started with reason #1 and #2 and the rest of the reasons came along as the competition progressed.

I hope to do something even more crazy and whacky next time!

Penguin Book Fair & $50 Competition

Penguin Book Fair at Singapore Expo (3 Dec 09 till 6 Dec 09)

I visited the penguin book fair at Singapore Expo and the only thing I can say is that if you LOVE books and you really want to find good deals, make your way down to the Penguin book fair.

Books are going for as cheap as $3 (they mentioned $1.00 but I couldn't find those books). I checked and realised that certain books which I bought for $20 to $30 at normal bookstores are going for as cheap as $8 to $10. That is a lot of SAVINGS if you are an avid book reader.

I saw some people pushing around like carts of book so I guess that they must be shopping for their entire year's worth of book there.

Seriously, if you have a budget of $100 to spend on books each year, just drop down to the Singapore Expo and you can easily buy 10 books! That is enough books to read for a year.

I myself bought over 10 books (including children books)

$50 Competition

I started a competition to give away prize money of SGD 50.00 here.

Competitors, please continue to take note of the following pointers.

1. Consecutive postings by 1 user will be considered as a single posting. For example, if User G post 5 comments consecutively, it will be considered as 1 single posting. Users are allowed to post multiple comments but are encouraged not to post consecutively to confuse others =)

2. Only 2 ways to win. First way, be the 50th comment and win $50. Second way, if there are less than 50 comments, be the last person to comment in 24 hours. Based on my last count, there were 38 comments already so somebody will surely walk away with $38 already.

Free Honeymoon

Is your marriage on the rocks?

A Malaysian state will be offering free second honeymoons for couples that are on the brink of divorce. They hope that these romantic getaways can help save their marriages.

Under this plan, feuding couples stand a chance to spend 3 days and 2 nights on a tropical island off Terengganu state.

To be eligible for this plan, couples will have to apply and then undergo an INTERVIEW before being sent on the honeymoons. (I really wonder what kind of questions are going to be asked at the interview....)

The honeymoon package is worth around S$615 and a successful pilot project involving 25 couples has already been carried out.

This is indeed an interesting proposal. I wonder whether they will start giving out free movie tickets and stuff too. Perhaps free movie tickets to watch Michael Jackson's This Is It movie that will be launched soon?

StarHub Loses EPL

Singapore has only two pay TV operators: StarHub and SingTel.

So StarHub has lost the rights to screen the EPL as well as ESPN Star Sports to SingTel.

But if StarHub loses, who is the winner?

In my view, there are no winners. StarHub loses. SingTel loses. The consumers (i.e. the man on the street who loves football) loses. There are no winners in this case.

StarHub currently has 530,000 pay TV subscribers versus SingTel's 100,000 subscribers. Will losing the rights to EPL make StarHub a loser? Not necessarily so.

Cable TV does not constitue a large percentage of StarHub's revenue and probably does not contribute much to its profits. It is bundled together with other services (like the mobile services) and that is what makes it "profitable". SingTel by winning the bid at such a high price is most probably not going to break even or make any profits. They have won boasting rights but not profits in any sense.

So if SingTel is not winning and StarHub is not winning, the consumers have to be winning right? Wrong.

Most consumers would not be switching over to SingTel's Mio TV just because of the sports channel. Not all who subscribe to cable TV watch football or sports for the matter. My parents have cable TV but they certainly do not watch sports. So they will definitely not be switching over to SingTel's Mio TV.

Most households in Singapore I believe do not watch sports. Sports are usually followed by males ranging from their 20s to 40s. At these age group, very few of them have their own homes. And those that do would probably have to consult the wife who will have to forgo the many other wonderful channels that StarHub provides.

FREE STREAMING OF LIVE FOOTBALL MATCHES

What will be the alternative? They will most probably turn to free online streaming casts of these football matches which they can easily obtain over the internet. The images might not be of that high quality. But what is one to do?? Or they could head down to the pubs and hope that the pubs do subscribe to Mio TV.

So StarHub loses, SingTel loses and the consumer loses.

How on earth did we get ourselves into such a Lose-Lose situation I wonder?

Free Stuff

It is time for me to share with people some free stuff that you can get online. Afterall, keeping our expenditure low is one of the best ways to become financially free.

Free Charting or Trading Tools

For charting purposes, there is a free software out there called ChartNexus that is extremely easy to use. The download is pretty fast too. The user interface is likewise easy even for the begineer. I would seriously recommend it to anyone who is trying out charting for the first time to download this software. Just type ChartNexus into Google and you should be able to find the site to download it from.

Free Sites for Movies or Drama Serials.

I am not talking about downloading movies illegally. Rather, it is about watching movies through streaming websites. You are not downloading anything per se. My current favorite site is www.mysoju.com . In this site, you can find all the latest korean and japanese movies and drama serials. The time it takes to load these movies are also pretty fast.

Free Sites for EPL matches

Want to watch English Premier League matches but can't afford to pay for the sports channel? Fret no more. Simply type MyP2P in google and you should see a website that allows you to watch live matches. You will need to download Sopcast (which is a sort of media player) in order to watch these streaming matches live. If you just want to watch the match highlights, go to YouTube or type matchhighlights.com and you can watch all the goals of the lastest matches.

Free Sites for News

Why buy newspapers when you can read them online? Apart from getting a free copy of the Today newspaper, there are a wide variety of news that is available online today. The following is a non-exhaustive list where I get my daily news from:

So there you have it. Some of the free stuff you can get off the web at no cost to you. Hope you enjoyed this posting.
