We've Crossed 400,000 PageViews

With more than millions of blogs around, this blog is not one of the large blogs around.  Neither is it a "hi - bye" kind of blog.  Each milestone is memorable and crossing 400,000 pageviews is memorable enough for me.

Thanks to all readers for supporting thus far.

Crossed 300,000 Pageviews

Phew!  This blog has crossed 300,000 pageviews.  While other blogs easily cross that mark in a matter of months, it has taken this blog a solid few years to cross that mark.  Or either that, Google must have tweaked something to reset my pageviews to zero when I started to notice my pageviews this year.  Anyway, it has taken only less than half a year in the year 2012 to climb from 200,000 pageviews to 250,000 pageviews to finally over 300,000 pageviews.

I guess the next challenge will be to cross the half a million pageviews mark. At the rate things are going, I should cross that mark mid-2013.  That will be amazing for me just as a personal achievement.

New Look for This Blog

After contemplating for some time, I decided that it was time to shed the "bluish" look that has stuck with this blog for the past 1 to 2 years.  So I am trying out something new and sticking to a really clean look which I hope readers will actually find more soothing to the eyes.  I am not a design kind of person so do bare with me.  I remember that there were some offers to help me design the blog (for a fee of course), but I could not afford it. Anyway, the look is new but the content remains the same.

I must admit that I am guilty of not pushing out  enough posts to satisfy my readers.  There is always this fear that I am boring readers to death and that there is really nothing interesting I can write about.

Okay, question of the day:  Will Greece default on their debts?

If so, how can we profit from it?

Why I Write

I was sad to discover that a fellow blogger had stopped writing.  He gave his farewell posting a few months back and I chanced upon it while I was just surfing around.  I am happy for him that he has decided that there are more important things to tend to.

Anyway, it got me questioning myself on why I even write this blog.  I have better things to do.  I have in fact too many things to do.  But writing is a form of relaxation for me.  A way to express myself.  A way to converse since I am not really gifted in talking (and there is nobody to talk to me in the real world).  Writing is my form of escape.  It is my way of voicing my thoughts.

Sometimes, it is good to just get something off my chest.  To know that I have voiced out my opinion on a matter and that somebody (whoever it is) is reading it.  And though I don't often reply to the comments that are left (sometimes, I just have no time to reply), I treasure each one deeply even as I read the encouraging words and thoughtful remarks that are left on this blog.

In a sense, this blog is like a living organism that has grown with me.  It contains memories and words that people have left, captured eternally on this faceless internet page.  And at the very same time, it is as if this blog reaches out to people and some how, probably in some small way, makes a positive impact on somebody's life.  I don't know.  Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't.  But the idea that such a thing can happen even without me meeting the person face to face is surreal.  It is like making a deposit in somebody's life.  Loving a person without actually knowing him or meeting him.

So I hope that you the reader knows why I write.

Drop me a comment.  Will love to hear from you.

Crossed the 250,000 Page Views

Not too long ago, I shared that this blog has crossed the 210,000 pageview mark.  I am happy to say that this site has surprisingly and beyond my wildest expectations crossed the 250,000 page view milestone earlier this week.  Thank you readers for your support, advice, comfort, jokes that you have shared with me along this journey.  I cannot thank you enough for how you all have contribute to this site and to me personally in one way or another.

Hopefully, this site will remain relevant for all. It is challenging to generate content. Very difficult considering that I do not have much free time to sit down, think and write.  Many of the posts are either written in the wee hours of the night when I would really love to be sleeping rather than writing, and also when my brain really stops functioning normally.

Maximum Number of Posts for Blog on Blogspot or Blogger

Just found out that Google does not limit the maximum number of posts once can have for a blog.  That's right!  The maximum number of posts for a blog on blogspot or blogger is infinity.  One is entitled to an unlimited amount of posts though there is a limit of 100 blogs per user.

That gets me wondering.  Is it possible to really have 10,000 or even 100,000 posts on a blog.  What kind of blog will that look like?  Is there even such a blog around today (like a world record for most number of posts on a blog)?

I really really wonder.

Overview for January 2012

The first month of 2012 is over.  January has been pretty uneventful for me except for quite a few large ticket items that I have spent on.  Passive income and dividends were $0 but I am expecting a bumper crop in the month of February since that will be when all the dividends from my REITs will most probably come in.

Expenditure wise, I have probably burnt some holes in my pocket from some large ticket items:
  • Car Servicing.  Sent my car for servicing and maintenance during the weekend.  It was long overdue and so, since I was free, decided that it will be a good time to spruce the car up a bit.  The costs added up quite a fair bit - over $560++. That was for a 36 point check (normal servicing, don't ask me what the checks were), changing a new  battery, change of transmission oil and new wipers to go along with it.
  • Term Insurance.  Just made annual payment of S$347.50 for my wife's coverage. Necessary expenditure but expensive nonetheless.
Investments wise:
  • Invested in First REIT mainly for dividend income.  First REIT is listed on the Singapore stock exchange and holds hospitals and nursing homes in various countries.  It gives a quarterly distribution of around 1.9 cents per unit.
  • Invested in Gamco Global Gold &Natural Resource Trust (GGN) - provides US$14 monthly dividends. Yet to receive the first batch of dividends for January since it usually takes some time before the cheque is posted.  Expecting this to come in for the month of Feb 2012.
Blogging wise:
  • Started an ad campaign and have spent close to US$100 on advertisements and promotional costs for this site.
  • Also exploring new ways to generate content (either by hiring a freelance writer or through other means).

210,000 Pageviews and Counting

Well, they say the first 200,000 is the easiest part (or at least I made that up).  But anyway, after a roller coaster ride through the year, I checked my stats recently to discover that this blog has garnered over 200,000 pageviews.  It is 210,000 today and I can only say that it is exciting to know that people are coming back for more.  At least, it is a sort of comfort, that somebody is actually reading what I am writing.

I will like to thank all readers for their continuous support.  This is also to readers who hail from outside Singapore like the United States, Malaysia, Slovenia, Germany, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Japan, Phillipines, India, etc..  Perhaps you just stumbled upon this blog but I do hope that you find something useful that you can takeaway with you.  Feel free to drop a comment and say "hi" too!

Thoughts of a Blogger

So I have been a "blogger" for a few years now.  And I must say that my foray into blogging was purely incidental.  And since the new year is here, I reflected on what I have been blogging about for the past few years and also how I would like to see things going forward.

The weirdest part about being a blogger is that people are actually viewing my thoughts. 200,000 over pageviews since I first started this blog.  That is quite a feat considering that the first few months of my blog, I was only getting 1 to 2 visitors per week!  So to know that there are actually so many people reading this makes me "frightened" at times.  I hope that they do not take me too seriously even though my posts often sound serious =)

Another striking thing that occured to me is the amount of email that I have to deal with.  I get lots of requests for link exchanges, personal finance queries, advertising queries, guest posts requests, etc.  It doesn't help that I do not check my email that frequently.  Not to forget all the spam that comes in.  It means that sometimes, I do not have the time to respond to emails or reply to queries which sometimes get lost in the hundreds of email.  So I apologise if I have missed out your email pertaining to some request.  For link exchanges, please look at my stated policy under the FAQs.  So do read them first before emailing me.  Leaving a comment is a good way for me to remember to respond though I sometimes have little time to respond to comments too.  A million apologies again.

I am also disgusted by the lack of quality in my writing.  If you know how much time I actually spend on writing and vetting my own work, you will probably forgive me.

Well, the most funny thing is that even though this is a personal finance blog (well, sort of), the greatest number of hits are actually on my non-investment related posts like Best Breakfast Places in Singapore. It sometimes makes me wonder whether I should be blogging about something else instead.

For 2012, I hope that I will be able to set aside more time to engage with readers.  To really have a conversation on this blog.; to build up each other's knowledge and financial know-how.  And to share with one another the ups and downs of life.  By now, I hope you have gotten a slight glimpse and insight into my thoughts.

Hitting 10,000 Unique Visitors and Some Blogs are Meant to be Savored

Hitting 10,000 Visitors Per Day

Blogging. I have probably written lots about it before and the targets that I have set for myself previously. Loyal readers of my blog will most probably know the targets that I have set for myself in terms of blog traffic and stuff. I realised that I have not been pursuing those targets that I have set for myself previously and that has somehow resulted in me being haphazard in my approach towards this blog.

It all starts with the mindset that goes: "Forget about those targets, let's just do what I want and blog about what I want to." Come to think of it, targets are actually not that bad. At least they help me to stay on track and be focused.

My target for this blog is to get 10,000 unique visitors per day. Will I be able to achieve such astounding numbers? I do not know. Currently, the only "medals" I have to show for from this past time and secret hobby of mine is as follows:

1. Blog link on Mr Tan Kin Lian's Blog. Most Singaporeans will know that Mr Tan Kin Lian is one of the current 3 Presidential Candidates for Singapore). Yes, my blog link is actually on his blog! Wow, I am surprised that he actually placed my blog link when I asked for a link exchange! =) Coincidentally, all the presidential candidates have surnames "Tan". Dr Tan Cheng Bock, Dr Tony Tan and Mr Tan Kin Lian. Ha..just realised it when I was writing this post.

2. CPF IMSavvy Blogger. I actually made it as one of the guest bloggers on CPF's IMSavvy site.
Well, I must say that I must be one of the lazier bloggers there cos I haven't really found time to write lately. But I promise that I will do more to make personal finance as interesting a topic as I can to many Singaporeans. I don't profess to be an expert but rather think that there is a lot we can learn from each other's experience. Theory helps but I think practical advice and real life experience is what most Singaporeans can probably relate to better. And that is why I have been rather open about taboo topics like my income and expenditure. Hopefully, that paves the way for better conversation surrounding the topic of personal finance. Some of my guest posts there can be found in this link here: Guest Posts on CPF IMSavvy

3. People are willing to put up guest posts on my blog. I have been getting emails from various sources requesting for me to feature guest articles on my site. Browse through my blog and you are sure to find some of these guest posts which I thought my bring a certain amount of "freshness" to this blog. Do let me know if you would also like to contribute a guest post. Just drop an email to sgfinancialfreedom@gmail.com.

Some Blogs Are Meant To Be Savored....

Yes, hitting 10,000 unique visitors might be a target that I set. But I still hope that this blog will be as personal as possible. And that readers will find something that they can relate to here. My achievements in life might not be many but I do hope that there are articles and posts here that people will be able to draw inspiration or strength from. The last thing I want readers to go away with is this crazy hunger or greed for money. While this blog is titled "Financial Freedom", I certainly do believe that there are probably many many more things in life that are more important than being rich/achieving financial freedom, etc.

As always, I welcome feedback. Any feedback that you might have. Please let me know how I can improve this blog by commenting below or just dropping me an email. Thank you and have a great weekend ahead!!

Am I afraid?

The past few days have been difficult for me. There have been many things that I feel passionately about but which I do not feel comfortable writing about. Am I afraid? What am I afraid of? These are the few questions that cross my mind. And sometimes it is just the fear of certain repercussions that will result from blogging too honestly about my personal life. Cos there are days when things do not go well and I feel like spewing vulgarities into the Internet. But I restrain myself because I know I will regret it one day and that I will end up revealing a side of me that readers might not be familiar with.

I need to admit that beneath a lot of happiness and good times are sometimes lots of heartaches, failures and angst. And sometimes, a happy weekend can soon turn into a deep bout of depression for me. I start to turn depressive and moody. The world suddenly seems a lot bleaker. The future is no longer bright. And I wallow in self-pity. It does not help that I cannot tell anyone what I truly feel. For if I do so, I might end up cursing and swearing under my breath. And that I know I will regret I'm due time. So I am afraid that I will destroy the image that I have been projecting all long. But somedays, I really feel like I need to get it off my chest.

So tomorrow is a brand new day. And I must remember that I live a life more fortunate than others. Be contented with what I have. One day the light will come. And hopefully I will have the courage to tell of my struggles and life in an honest manner. And perhaps I could share my deepest regret with all one day. But in the mean time, I need to get out of this depressive mood! Perhaps the best way is to not think about it. But then that is just ignoring the problem. Perhaps it is time I confront the problem head on.

Revert Does Not Mean Reply and Mistakes that New Bloggers Make

Many people confuse the word "revert" and "reply". Very frequently, we see in emails whether personal or work where the sender asks readers to "Please revert by....". And most people actually do not realise that this is the wrong use of the word. In fact, I have been guilty of this mistake for many years too. It wasn't until recently that I realised my mistake. The confusion between these two words and the misuse of them is common.

Back to the main topic of mistakes that bloggers make. Just yesterday, I wrote about how the news had reported bloggers that can earn up to $5000 per month. I am almost certain that this will spark some youngster to pick up blogging as a hobby. Some might even do it at the expense of studying or working.

I am not a full-time blogger. But having blogged for a few years now, I thought that I should at least "impart" whatever I have learnt and clear any misconceptions that some may have about blogging. So before you proceed to set up a blog and become a full-time blogger, here are a few things that you ought to know:

Blogging is not as simple as it sounds.

They hype about people making money from blogging always sounds too good to be true. It sounds like pretty easy money. Why not? Just sit at home and type and wala! Money appears in your account. The problem is: It is not as simple as one thinks.

Blogging is actually a lot harder than one thinks. Apart from issues like Writer's Block, you also have to deal with the many other problems that come with it. Bloggers also have to struggle with how much privacy they hope to achieve or whether they want to keep their blog a secret. What if you realise your friends are reading your blogs? Will you still write it? Blogging is not like tuition or some hourly part-time work where pouring in more time equates to more effort.

In fact, writing a single post a day probably makes little difference (in terms of ad revenue) to writing 2 posts a day. In fact, there are article writers out there who are willing to charge $3 for a 300 word article. And why are they not setting up their own blogs to publish those articles? Because a 300 word article will not actually make you $3 in ad revenue. And that is why article writers will sell you their articles. In fact, most people are better off churning out 300 word articles for $3. You would probably earn much more from writing articles for others compared to blogging. So churning out 10 or even 100 posts a day on your blog is not going to translate to a multiplier effect. It most probably will have little effect.

So remember, blogging is not as simple as it sounds. Putting in the time and effort does not guarantee success. Unless you are already a celebrity, it is going to be awfully difficult to reach that $5000 per month figure. It is achievable but I believe only the best bloggers in Singapore are able to reach that amount. And that means bloggers like Xiaxue or people who have managed to amass a huge following. And that usually means hours and hours of hard work. Definitely not as simple as you would like to think.

Blogging Requires Passion.

Blogging also requires a certain amount of passion for writing, sharing, and of course, the topic that you are going to write about. In my few years of blogging, I have seen countless cases of bloggers who beg for a link exchange only to stop blogging after a few months. It is just way too common. The amount of time required to blog is more than you can imagine. And to keep it up for years is even much much harder. Most of these bloggers think they will earn money from blogging but then realised that after 1 year of blogging, they are better off focusing on their jobs and working part time (or perhaps just selling their articles to others). The money is simply better than what they can earn from their blogs. Basically, blogging requires a lot of passion. And that means blogging even if you don't earn any money from your blogs. If you can't do that, you most probably would not make it as a full-time blogger.

Full Time Bloggers Can Earn Up To $5000 Per Month

Just recently, I wrote about blogging and its misconceptions. Basically, I was commenting on the fact that many readers have misconceived ideas about who I am and what I do due to "historical" drips and draps of information that are scattered over this blog and which I have failed to update. Thanks for bearing with all the confusing information but sometimes it helps if readers just visit the most current posts to find out where I am in life. Of course, there are certain issues which I blogged about and failed to update all later. So it seems like I am still struggling with that issue but perhaps I have already gone way past that and did not see the point in blogging at all. For info, I have a full time job now and am quite happy with my life.

Anyway, it was interesting to read the news today to learn that more Singapore bloggers are going full-time. Nuffnang had indeed revealed that the top bloggers in Singapore can earn up to $5000 per month. Of course, that is quite a tidy sum of money and I am assuming that most of this income is derived from ad revenue. Of course, there must be other sources of income. I reckon that celebrity bloggers are earning somewhere close to that amount. But compared to international bloggers, the $5000 per month figure is of course quite low.

The only fear I have is that many more people will jump recklessly into the blogging bandwagon. Of course it is possible to make a full time career out of blogging but it is probably not as simple as it sounds. And the picture painted might make it seem so rosy: Work from home, flexi work hours, good money. It is not that simple. And I am sure the full time bloggers will attest to that.

For every blogger that is earning $5000 per month, I am pretty certain there are 1000 others who are earning less than $5 per month. Remember, $5000 per month is not the average, it is what Nuffnang considers to be the higher earners. So these are really the outliers and not your average bloggers.

Anyone here knows of a full time blogger? How much does he/she earn?

Blogging and its Misconceptions

It seems almost like eternity since I started off blogging. Well, this blog really isn't my first blog. I had some other blog which I think got deleted away after sometime because I did not post for too long or something.

Anyway, I realised that many people have misconceptions about who I am. Perhaps they read a post or two in this blog and thought that I am somebody that I am not. The problem with a blog is that some information is really historical and if a person lands on one of those historical pages where I was perhaps ranting about something, they get the idea that I am still in that situation or something.

Some of the emails/comments I have been receiving include the following misconceptions:

1. That I am the billionaire Peter Lim and I can somehow give them advise.

2. That I am still looking for a job.

3. That I was/am an engineer.

I do not know why people have such misconceptions. Perhaps they read something that I wrote and made certain assumptions. Sometimes, I am aware of these misconceptions but the lack of time just does not allow me to clear the air either by replying those emails or commenting back.

Hopefully, this post will clear the air once and for all.

Writer's Block

I finally had it. Writer's block. I cannot find the words to describe how I am feeling. I don't really know what to write about too. It is the worst thing to happen to a blogger. After the new year, I just felt kind of lazy and stopped blogging for a while. Days turned into weeks and I soon realised that I was hardly logging on with the frequency and fervor that I used to have.

I also do not seem to have any topic in mind to write about. There are lots of topics out there to talk about but does it really matter if I write about it or not? After all, there are people out there who can probably do a much better job than me dissecting the latest piece of market news, hot stocks to buy, and so on....

It does not mean that I will stop blogging. It only means that I am taking a break and hopefully I will come back with soon.

I enjoyed the conversations and comments on this blog but sometimes, it just feels like I am talking to the air and I really feel that I could better spend my time with family or even just do some of the things that I enjoy doing. Why blog? After a while, this blog will die eventually. But there are more important things in life than blogging. And I can put my time to better use in other avenues.

I have also been feeling a little down and lost lately and that has some what affected my mood to write. Oh well, I will be back. Maybe after Chinese New Year.

Wishing all readers a Happy Chinese New Year!!

Online University

Crazy ideas often come into my head. And this is one crazy idea that just slipped into my mind when I was reading a book.

What if I can turn my blog into some kind of online university?

Well, we all know that people go to university to gain knowledge and to share knowledge and to discuss with peers about what you have learnt. Basically, the quest for knowledge actually involves lots of discussion. And what better way to accomplish this discussion then through a blog with people giving their comments on topics that I or a guest blogger has posted.

There are lots of insights from all my readers and I must admit that certain comments are even better than my blog posts itself! How cool will it be if this blog could turn into some kind of knowledge repository where people can turn to and look for information regarding a certain topic to know that it has been thoroughly thought through by various individuals?

What if I could turn blogging into something that is much larger than itself? Something that actually helps to transmit ideas and educate people?

Of course, I am not sure how wide the topics should cover. But I was thinking that anything interesting and related to finance will do. The problem with being too specific in topics is that it alienates some readers while at the same time, being too general can cause certain readers to become frustrated that they are unable to find the information that they are looking for.

But I am seriously toying with the idea and think that it will be really good. Essentially, I or somebody could come up with an interesting topic. Everyone can then feel free to do their own research and participate. But of course, most people I believe are not that keen into doing research and spending so much time talking about a particular topic especially if they are not interested in it.

Any takers? We can take it at a very slow pace =)

New Look For This Site

Hi People!

I finally did the thing that I have been procrastinating for the longest time. I gave this site an overhaul using the latest design features from Blogger.

I have always been afraid of tinkering about with the design because I was afraid that it might corrupt my files and stuff. Silly me!

Anyway, since I had some time to burn today, I just fiddled around with Blogger's latest design tab functions and chose the simplest design for my blog. I think the new look is much better than the previous look.

For your info, to comment on this blog now, you will have to click the comments link that is located near the title of the post.

Hope you like the new layout of this blog. Do let me know if there is anything that you feel needs to be tweaked to make this blog look better.

Best regards,
FF

How Powerful is Your Blog?

Every now and then, I am amazed at the power of blogging.

I am not a natural blogger and blogging does not come naturally to me. Yet, I find it much easier to express myself through writing compared to speech. Thus, I blog.

What makes it amazing is the ability to rank high on Google searches for certain keywords. In a certain sense, one is able to get your thoughts across to many people at one go. Imagine people reading your postings on certain topics and taking action on your advice or recommendations!

Just another scenario. Imagine being able to "talk" to thousands of people each month without actually having to meet them. This is what a blog is able to do. It really amazes me on how powerful a blog can be if you use it for the correct purpose.

Many times, I have had ideas on how I could expand my blog be it in terms of layout or the content. I have brainstormed on various topics that I would like to write about but simply procrastinated. Perhaps it is time I take some action to propel this blog forward to greater heights.

How powerful is your blog? How do you intend to make it more impactful?

2nd Anniversary - A Good Time for Some Reflection

This day marks the 2nd anniversary of this blog. Or to be more exact, the day when the idea of blogging came to my head.

I still remember very clearly that two years ago, I was sitting at the balcony of some hotel room enjoying the breeze and just doing some journalling.

Two years have passed.

In this two years, I realised a few things. Perhaps it is the "older but wiser" syndrome.

1. Friends don't stay forever. I have lost contact with a lot of friends. This is due to either a change in workplace or due to other unforseen circumstances. I meet up a lot less with close friends compared to the past due to family committments. What I have realised is that friends come and go. When you have the opportunity to meet up every day because you work in the same office, it seems like the relationship will last forever. Once things change, you realise that you most probably will not meet up with some people again. Perhaps in facebook only?

2. Be a bit more discerning. I have learnt not to be too trusting of other people. I am now a lot more skeptical when I hear advice from people.

3. Investments go up and down. It has been a roller coaster ride in the stock market for the past two years. I am a lot more immune to the ups and downs in the stock market now.

4. Unclear of future direction. I remain very unclear about the direction that God wants me to go with regards to many things in my life. I feel a bit lost sometimes as I do not seem to be progressing in my career. For a guy, a career basically sums up his relevance to society, family and sometimes even defines him as a person. Without a clear cut career path in front of me, I have been lost, discouraged and depressed.

5. Blogging is good but..... At the blogging end, I now blog to keep readers entertained and educated. Hopefully they learn something from my mistakes and experiences. Blogging is good but it takes up a lot of my personal time.

The picture above depicts slaves taking the route from Africa to Americas during the slave trade. Sometimes, I feel like I am on this ship not knowing where I am going and what the future holds for me.

Perhaps I am at the start of my mid-life crisis...

Invitation to blog@IM$avvy

Dear friends,

I have been quite amazed at what this blog has achieved in such a short period of time. I have gotten countless of offers for help from readers. I have gotten lots of encouragement from strangers. And now I even got an offer to blog at CPF's IM$avvy.

I have been considering about the option and was wondering whether it would be too heavy a committment to commit to. Besides, I don't get paid. But nevertheless, I think it would be good exposure for me.

The email that was sent to me earlier this month is attached below (I have omitted certain sensitive information):
