Have been slowly building up my coin collection of silver including a few bullion. As of today, I have the Canadian Maple Leaf, American Eagle, Austrian Philharmonic, Buffalo coins and some Scottsdale Silver bars. Many of them are mainly 1 troy oz and some of them are sealed in airtight containers.
The coins are nice to look at, but I seriously regretted using my bare hands to touch some of them as they now have a whittish tarnish on them which can't be removed.

ReplyDeleteWhen handling a coin always hold a coin by the edge, never the faces, even if it's a coin that has been in circulation. By doing this you will prevent any further damage by examination.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the advice on how to handle a silver coin. That is the way I hold all silver coins now.
ReplyDeleteTarnished = milk spots. Even without using bare hands / keep in airtight container it would still be with milk spots. Good news is these could be removed by buying tarnish cloth. The vendor also advised me to keep the coins together with anti-tarnish strips and replacing the strips monthly. Also read in internet that it could also be stored together with carbon.
